You do not need a flight to find paradise — Ghana's waterfall country is a weekend away from Accra. Wli Falls in the Volta Region is the tallest waterfall in West Africa, thundering off the Agumatsa cliffs; Boti Falls near Koforidua splits into famous twin streams said to be male and female; and Asenema Falls, just past the Aburi hills, is where our travelers stop for the best natural massage in the country.
Here is the weekend we run most often. Saturday: leave Accra early, wander the Aburi Botanical Gardens, then let Asenema's cascade pound the week out of your shoulders before a paint-and-sip evening. Sunday: Boti Falls and the hike to Umbrella Rock, with palm-fringed views over the Yilo Krobo hills. Got a long weekend? Push on to the Volta Region for Wli and the sacred monkeys of Tafi Atome.
Time it right: the falls are at full power during and just after the rains, roughly May to October — Wli can shrink to a ribbon by March. Local guides are required (and worth it) at Wli and Boti, entry fees are a few cedis, and water shoes plus a dry bag for your phone will make you the smartest person on the trail.
Asenema's waterfall massage is the only spa in Ghana where the therapist never gets tired.
Go June–October when the falls run at full volume.
Hire the local guides — trails at Wli and Boti require them, and they know the stories.
Pack water shoes and a dry bag; you will get closer than you planned.
Do not skip Umbrella Rock — the view above Boti beats the falls themselves.
Combine Aburi Gardens, Asenema and Boti into one unhurried weekend.
This is the Ghana we love showing off — green, loud with water, and an hour or two from home. Our Aburi Adventure Day Tour and Waterfalls & Highlands Escape cover every stop in this guide, transport, guides and lunch included.
Did this exact weekend with Navigate Africa in October — the falls were at full power and the waterfall massage at Asenema is no joke. My neck has never felt better.
Umbrella Rock was the surprise of my whole Ghana trip. Take the guide's hand on the last scramble and bring cash for the coconut seller at the top!
